Challenge
Our client – an international Oil & Gas Operator with equity in a joint venture of oil and gas production assets offshore Vietnam, required Telos to review their operations in this region with a view to reducing their carbon footprint by investigating the causes of CO2 emissions from the facility and providing possible reduction solutions. As well as providing technical solutions to reduce CO2 emissions, this scope would also have to satisfy the requirements of all partners within the joint venture.
Approach
The client proactively monitors and records the emissions from the asset linked to combustion but wished to better understand why such emissions occurred and what measures or technology could be implemented to reduce or remove the causes of such emissions.
The asset management and operational experience of the Telos team allowed for a review of the current operations and existing employed technologies to ascertain the benchmark from where to begin, and what could be implemented to reduce the need for combustion and the production of CO2.
Due to the COVID-19 restrictions on travel the scope had to be conducted remotely and via video conferencing with the clients operations team.
Solution
We used our extensive knowledge of offshore installations and production facilities to review the current operation and identify possible areas for improvement or further engineering study relating to reducing GHG emissions. This included generation and power management, utilising renewable technologies and the implementation of ejector technology to utilise existing energy within the process to recover lower pressure gas. Therefore, reducing the power demands by reducing the reliance of powered compressor trains. This review included both fixed jacket platforms and FPSO facilities. In some cases utilising existing systems to improve production performance and reduce the quantities of associated gas diverted to flare.
Outcome
We successfully outlined a number of possible initiatives and technologies which could be implemented to reduce CO2 emissions from the asset.
The findings were constructed into a presentation for delivery to the clients Board.
This work has lead to continued work with the client to further progress the findings.
